St Michael’s Grammar School is the private school of choice for Melbourne families who value Dignity, Respect, Care and Compassion, and want their children to be safe, nurtured and challenged as individuals.
We are an inclusive co-educational community offering a single-campus model, state-of-the-art facilities, expert teachers and broad-ranging, future-focused programs that support each student to maximise their potential. Each student is equipped with the knowledge, attributes and confidence to pursue a meaningful future.
Originally a School for girls, St Michael’s became coeducational in the 1970s. Today, we aim for gender balance in each cohort so that students experience genuine coeducation and the many benefits of learning and growing together. Our leadership in coeducation is reflected in consistently high VCE results, with gender balance among top performers and 100% of students receiving their first university preference.
We were one of the first schools in Victoria to remove gender-based uniform requirements, following student recommendations. As a Respectful Relationships Lead School, we embed age-appropriate learning from Kindergarten to Year 12 that builds self-awareness and supports healthy relationships. Senior students are supported to explore issues such as gender-based violence and LGBTQIA+ rights in a spirit of respectful debate.
Our goal is to offer the right extension opportunities for every student — whether in STEM, Humanities, the Arts, Sport or Culture. This is reflected in the diverse achievements of Old Michaelians, from AFLW stars and scientists to film directors and CEOs.
We focus on developing core competencies for the future: Creativity, Collaboration, Character, Critical Thinking, Communication and Citizenship. Our partnership with The University of Melbourne’s New Metrics project supports new ways to measure student growth beyond the ATAR.
With almost 50 years of experience in coeducation, our emphasis on contributing citizenship and holistic wellbeing empowers students to make a difference in the world.
At St Michael’s, learning is personal. From Kindergarten to Year 12, our curriculum is designed to nurture curiosity, challenge thinking and support each student’s growth. Students engage in a broad academic program—English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Languages, the Arts, Health and Physical Education—alongside specialist programs in STEAM, Outdoor Education and faith-based learning that encourages reflection and values development. From Year 8, students begin shaping their own pathways through electives, leading to a diverse VCE offering of over 40 subjects. With expert teachers, real-world learning and a focus on creativity, character and citizenship, St Michael’s students are equipped to thrive—at school and in life beyond.
